Educational Goals
Worship
We will be having worship every morning at the beginning of the day, and on Fridays our worships will be a bit longer.
Bible
The students will be using their Bibles for Bible class. We will read stories from the Old Testament and the New Testament. We will do projects that will enhance the learning experience and make it applicable to today's world. We will also study Church History 4th quarter. The students will be memorizing Bible verses every week also. AS a class we will find a community project that we can be involved in on a regular basis.
Handwriting
The students will have daily assignments in their textbook, A Reason for Handwriting. The students will also be writing in cursive on all major writing assignments. Their handwriting grade will be based on neatness, effort, and improvement. Handwriting will be due on Wednesday, unless there is no school on Monday. Then it is due Thursday.
Math
We are using Houghton-Mifflin GoMath. These books were adopted by the NAD this year and will be used by all the Adventist schools in North America. The book is the common Core edition. This book will take the students through whole numbers, decimals and integers. There will be a review of addition and subtraction. We will build on our basic multiplication skills to include three and four digit numbers. The students will practice division strategies with one and two digit divisors. The students will build on the skill of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals and fractions, including having to reduce those down to lowest terms. The students will also learn rounding, geometry, measurement, algebra, estimating, story problems, graphing, ratios, percentages, integers and coordinate planes, and averages. There is an on-line component to the program. You will be getting a letter with information about this.
I will be sending home a homework worksheet or the math workbook almost every evening to reinforce the lesson presented that day. These are due the next day in class. Exception- There will be no math workbook on the days we do not do math or on the days when we don't get far enough in the lesson.
Social Studies
The students will study about the history of North America Discovery Era from the early Native Americans through California 1800's. This will be done through a variety of materials including literature, illustrated histories, documents, weekly reader, and movies. The students will also write and illustrate a book on California.
English/Writing
English/writing will be a combination of learning grammar using the book, Ridgewood Grammar-The Language Connection and Step up to Writing. We will be doing grammar every day, and writing at least 1 1-2 page writing assignment per month. The students will learn to write a narrative, expository, descriptive, imaginative, biography, and a how to assignment. There will also be a Bible journal for the students to write in every day, and short opinion papers throughout the school year.
Reading
A student's reading grade will be composed of three sections. One is Accelerated Reading, reading comprehension worksheets, and our SECC reading curriculum program. The students will read a story a week from our reading book, take an AR test, and work on worksheets that go along with the story. Students will also read each day and work towards a goal set by the teacher and student per quarter after taking the Star test.
Science
The students will explore the world around them through the study of the following themes: Life Science, Human Body, Earth/Space Science and Physical Science. Students will participate in many hands-on activities, enabling them to experience what they are learning in class. The students will also present a science experiment in class, allowing them to teach other students about their topic.
